One of the main reasons why LED office lighting, and particularly LED linear lighting, has gone down a storm with office fit-out companies and architects alike in recent times is the sheer flexibility it affords. You can create custom curves, corners and circles of almost any proportion, allowing designers to create stunning bespoke luminaires that are a design statement in themselves.

However, as with many elements of office design, it is advisable to strive for a middle ground between form and function when designing the lighting for your workspace. What does this mean? In other words, to try to achieve beautiful lighting that delivers that ‘wow’ factor whilst maintaining correct light levels throughout the space, and coordinating with other elements in the space.

Is the lighting suited to the task? Whether it be pendant lights to add character and ambience to a breakout area or task lighting over an area for detailed work, LED office lighting not only needs to look cool but also provide the right kind of light for the task in hand, at the right lux levels.

Will it be too bright? In a similar way to how environments that are too dim can cause eye strain, those that are too bright bring their own set of problems. Working in spaces that are too bright or have excess glare from lights can commonly cause headaches among staff and decrease productivity as a result. When designing your LED office lighting, consider using UGR<19 compliant fittings to prevent glare – read about UGR<19 in our article here.

Does the lighting work in harmony with other elements in the space? An important consideration this, especially if you are using continuous luminaires such as LED linear. Particularly with the trend for exposed services, you need to think about whether any suspended fittings with conflict with services such as air conditioning ducts.

serviced-office-space-2.jpg

Will the luminaires fit through the access routes? If using long single pieces of LED linear lighting, for example, consider what the longest single length is that you can fit in the lift/up the stairs – sounds ridiculously obvious but you don’t want to come to delivery to floor 56 and find that your 4m pieces of LED linear don’t fit in the 6×4’ lift!

Will it look too big? When designing statement luminaires for your space it’s tempting to max out the space available to achieve that ‘wow’ look. However, think carefully before doing this and consider scaling back a bit. In a similar way to wall art and furniture, statement lighting pieces need enough space around them to really look good. Make the luminaires too big and the final effect could look cramped.

Will it be a headache to install? If you are wondering about large, complex customised luminaires for your workspace to create visual impact, think about whether there are going to be hidden costs at install stage due to the challenge of installation. Fitting large and complex luminaires can be complex and time-consuming. If your budget allows for this, that’s all well and good; you will doubtless achieve a stunning result. However, one practical way to simplify this and therefore cut costs is to break large, complex single luminaires down into ‘bit size’ pieces, resulting in an easier and faster installation and probably a cost saving too.

SAS CEILING TYPES AND THE IMPLICATIONS FOR LIGHTING

The flexibility of SAS ceiling systems means there are many types that can be installed. The most common type in any workspace is the lay-in tile with an exposed grid ceiling. These are usually 600x600mm square and sourcing lighting for these is not usually a problem. There is an almost limitless number of 600×600 LED Panels available on the market with a huge variation in quality and design. However, when a less common type of ceiling is fitted the options for SAS Ceiling lighting can be more limited. Each of the four main SAS ceiling types requires a slightly different light fitting.

SAS130 LAY-IN TILES

SAS130 ceiling is most used in office and other workspaces. The tiles simply lay in on the metal grid system which can be flush (termed Alugrid) or Tegular (termed Tee Grid) which protrude down below the grid. These tiles are popular because they are easy to install and provide tool-free access to the void space behind which makes maintenance easy.

The tiles are usually the white fibre boards with a fissured surface everyone associates with offices. However, it is possible to source plain and metal tiles. The most popular tiles used in Europe are flush and in the UK Tegular are more common. When choosing light fittings for SAS130 and indeed any suspended ceiling it is a good idea to consider if they will be paired with flush or Tegular tiles. In the case of workspaces, It is important to consider a light fittings which support a UGR19 compliant low glare lighting scheme.SAS 130 drawing-01.jpg

SAS120 AND SAS150 CLIP IN TILES

SAS120 is the original metal ceiling and is most often used in Hospital and Food preparation areas. The clip in fittings allows for more robust cleaning without dislodging the tiles. The SAS150 system is the same as SAS120 but with hinged access. When choosing lighting for these ceilings, particularly if it is for Healthcare and Catering applications, it is important to take note of the clip-in system, Module size and IP rating of the luminaire. You might also want to consider the UGR rating of the fitting as a part of the overall design.SAS 150 drawing-01.jpg

SAS200 HOOK ON TILES

SAS200 is another suspended ceiling with a concealed grid which is extremely flexible this allows for more bespoke installation in high end projects where the ceiling is a standout feature. There are no standard tile sizes for SAS200 ceilings. The tiles can be up to 3000mm in length and a minimum width of 300mm. Lighting SAS 200 ceiling almost always requires bespoke lighting or designing the ceiling around existing fittings. Again, it is important to check the light fitting can be suspended within the grid with the hook-on system.

SAS320 LAY-IN TILES

SAS320 is a lay-in tile system without a grid. These tiles are instead suspended from edge trims and features such a lighting and ventilation grills. There are no standard size tiles for this system, and they can be trimmed to size. This allows for easy installation of suitable recessed spotlights, LED linear and feature lighting such as curved profile luminaires, rings and discs.

SAS330 LAY-IN TILES

SAS330 is a premium ceiling tartan or linear grid system which accept tiles in any shape including curved and coffered and, in any size, up to 3 metres in length. This system allows for seamless integration with lighting and other utilities such as signage and partitions. SAS 330 drawing-01.jpg

What is Acoustic Lighting?

Acoustic Lighting combines a lighting source with sound-absorbing materials, to provide a luminaire that helps reduce unwanted noise in a space. More office environments are embracing not just flexible working areas with hot-desking and breakout spaces, but also the style of open ceilings and visible services. This can lead to hard surfaces throughout a workspace, which can give an unwanted reflection of sound and can make an environment noisier than it should be.

Material Details

Synergy Creativ is proud to use recycled PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) in our acoustic lighting. PET is a form of polyester, which is usually used in plastic bottles for drinks, detergent, salad dressings and the like.

Composition – 100% PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) with a 60% recycled content
Environmental – Acoustic material has a 60% recycled content, and is recyclable.
Standards – Fire specification – EN13501-1 Class B–s1,d0 and Acoustic performance – EN ISO 354:2003
Non-hazardous – no formaldehyde binders are used in the manufacturing process.
Lifetime – PET is not affected by moisture, mould or mildew and will not rot or deteriorate under normal conditions.

Frequencies of sound

There are two aspects to sound which dictate how well we can hear it, the first is the volume, or loudness, which is measured in decibels. The second is the frequency, or whether it is a low rumbling sound or a high pitched squeak. Humans can detect sounds in the range of 20Hz to 20,000Hz.

Examples of sounds and their frequencies:

  • Tuba ~ 32Hz
  • A truck driving past ~ 250Hz
  • Male baritone voice ~ 400Hz
  • Typical vocal range ~500-3000Hz

Noise Reduction Coefficient

Acoustics is quite a complex subject. In essence, the NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) is a rating in the range from 0 to 1. If a material has a rating of 0, then the material absorbs no sound, and all sound is reflected back into the space. If a material has a rating of 1 then the material absorbs all the sound, and so none is reflected back into the room.
